Greek airports 9month passenger traffic figures increase

The latest figures from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority sows record-breaking 10 percent rise in passenger traffic for the first nine months of the year in Greek airports.

A total of 53 million passengers handled for the period Jan-Sep 2018. Compared to 48.2 million in the same period last year this is a breaking all records to date. The percentage increase achieved was a 10 percent.

For the month of September, the number of passengers increased by 10.6 percent to 8.6 million. The number of flights increased by 12 percent to 67.177. The number of foreign passenger arrivals came to 3.198.349, up by 10.8 percent compared to 2017 at 2.886.032 arrivals.

The number of flights came to 435.699. 160.959 of them domestic and 274.740 international achieving a 9.2 percent increase versus last year’s figures.

Leading airports in terms of passenger traffic in September were Athens International Airport (AIA) handling 2.5 million travelers.  Heraklion Airport follows with 1.2 million and Rhodes Airport with 908.085 passengers handling.

Of the country’s smaller airports, top performers in the nine-month period were Sitia airport (Crete), Milos and Naxos islands. The respectively percentages are 110.6 percent, 70.6 percent and 58.1 percent.

Kalamata airport shows a 13% increase for the period Jan-Jul 2018 with 94.229 passengers handled. A significant increase of 40%, according to the Airport Manager D.Mandilaris, were shown on private jet arrivals versus last year. This was the outcome of the improvements of Messinia’s tourist facilities to meet high standards and high net worth customers.
